1950s-1960s Sci-Fi: Hayden Howard

John Hayden Howard (1925-2014), sci-fi short story and novel writer, was published prolifically in the ’60s. His biography is in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, and he continues to have a fan base 70 years after he began writing.

John Hayden Howard (1925-2014)

John Hayden Howard was the author of over fifty short stories and novelettes and one novel. Thirty seven of his stories had been previously published, 73 times (in the US, UK, and Australia, with translations in French and Italian). Those stories included science fiction, but also sea stories and detective stories.

In Hayden Howard’s entry in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, his listed works include his 1967 novel, The Eskimo Invasion (1967, Ballantine Books, New York), nominated for a Nebula Award, plus twenty-five published sci-fi short stories. In his writing heyday–the 1950s through the 70s, he was published in magazines including IF Worlds of Science, Planet Stories, Galaxy Science Fiction, Analog Science Fiction and Fact, Tales of the Sea and Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. His work was also published in BEST SF: 1970, edited by Harry Harrison and Brian W. Aldiss (G.P. Putnam’s Sons New York, 1971). Another story of his was republished in Isaac Asimov’s Space Shuttles (Ace, October 6, 1987), a collection of seven novelettes including Hayden’s.

I knew him as “Jack” for twenty-five years, until he passed away in 2014. As his stepdaughter, and now executor of his estate, I manage the literary works for the Estate of John Hayden Howard. I recently compiled some of his 1950s-1960s works into a book series being published by WildBlue Press.

The first title, releasing July 25, 2023, in e-book, paperback and hardcover is: REAWAKENED WORLDS: Vintage Dystopian and Sci-Fi Stories from a Master Storyteller, by John Hayden Howard. Volume One contains eight stories: a mix of previously published and never before published short stories and novelettes. These came from John Hayden Howard’s original manuscripts written in the in the 1950s and 1960s, which I digitized, edited and compiled.

Five of his other old stories from the 1950s, not included in the Reawakened Worlds series, fell into Public Domain and can be read for free at Project Gutenberg. Those are now being copied repeatedly into e-books for sale by unknown publishers not connected with the author’s estate. Reawakened Worlds is the first and only book series authorized by the estate of John Hayden Howard, and the estate retains all copyrights to his material that is not in Public Domain.
